So tired........
Finished my biochemie mid-term this early morning, and it was such a bomb!!! Guess none of us actually memorize the mechanism for homocysteine formation......(what the heck...)
So, in order to comfort myself, I decided to give my blood. After having a yummy tuna sandwich + free white chocolate mocha (from Hall Health for passing HIPPA test) and my Japanese calss, I headed to HUB with brisk steps~~~ BUT BUT BUT!!! The booth won't be set up until next Monday...... Hahaha~~ great, there is no excuse for being delighted left.
There is one funny thing worth mentioning.....
It's kinda hard to explain in words, so I'll just do some translation here and put down the conversation between our Japanese TA and one of our classmate, XXXXX-san.
TA: xxxxx-san, what time is it now?
xxxxx-san: Humm....I don't know.
TA: Oh, you don't have a watch?
xxxxx-san: No. Oh, wait.......here....I have my alarm clock with me.......
(the WHOLE class + TA ~!@#$%^&.....nani?? You carry your ALARM CLOCK all the time?)
And he was like: Yeah~~ coz I need only one clock to know the time. And it alarms!!

象林旺是孫立人引以為傲的二次大戰戰友

陪伴台灣民眾五十多個年頭的的亞洲象林旺今天凌晨在木柵動物園安詳過世。林旺是許多小朋友童年的記憶，也是參加過二次世界大戰對日戰爭老兵的「老戰友」。林旺在抗日名將孫立人將軍率領的「新一軍」中，負責運送軍需品，和官兵一起出生入死，是孫立人將軍引以為傲的戰友。
亞洲象「林旺」，原名「阿美」 (緬甸語音譯)，為「林中之王」之意，後來被媒體誤傳為「林旺」，就以「林旺」為名。林旺屬於亞洲象，雄性，出生地在緬甸，新一軍當初推估林旺出生時間是在民國七年左右。
參加二次大戰滇緬戰爭的老兵楊一立回憶，在緬甸一帶，當地人習慣捕捉野生大象加以馴服，做為林間搬運木頭的「工作象」。林旺原為「工作象」，但民國三十年二次世界大戰「珍珠港事變」爆發，林旺被入侵中南半島的日軍「拉伕」，搬運槍砲彈糧等軍需品。
日軍在二次大戰封鎖中南半島海岸線，沿滇緬公路北上進攻，企圖斷絕戰略物資輸入中國大陸。國軍派出三個軍約十多萬人編成精銳的「中國遠征軍」，進入緬甸地區協助殖民政府英軍作戰，為第一次滇緬戰爭。民國三十二年，孫立人率領的「新一軍」受命反攻緬甸，為第二次滇緬戰爭，新一軍連戰皆捷，日軍節節敗退。新一軍第三十師奉命攻打南坎，並派員過「瑞麗江」擄象，以大象搭成橋墩，讓部隊潛行過江突擊。
當時從日軍擄獲十三頭大象，林旺是其中最年輕、健壯的一頭。新一軍三十師突擊日軍，一舉收復南坎。楊一立說：「三天後孫立人將軍召開戰地記者招待會，這十三頭大象一時之間成為國際媒體的焦點，照片還發到世界各國」。從日軍擄獲的大象從此加入孫立人的部隊，和官兵一起出生入死。
民國三十四年四月，中國駐印遠征軍奉調返回大陸，這十三頭大象無法搭飛機，只能由官兵和馴象師隨行護送，沿著滇緬公路一步一步前進，從印度臘戍到雲南。但是回國路迢迢，由於天氣乾熱，路面是石子路，在日夜兼程趕路下，多隻大象的象腳都磨破，發炎化膿。而由於象隊不屬部隊正式編制，沒有配給糧草，因此士兵們還沿途為大象們「化緣」張羅食物。但因為長時間累積疲勞和營養不良，在途中有六隻大象不支到地。
剩下七隻大象，孫立人將軍趕緊派車運送，最後平安到達雲南曲靖霑益營區。後來孫立人將軍為將中國駐印遠征軍戰功傳揚各地，因此將其中四隻大象分別運送至北京、南京和上海、長沙等大城的動物園。
林旺及阿蘭和阿沛二隻母象隨新一軍接收廣州而被飼養在廣州動物園。孫立人將軍在廣州市郊白雲山修築「陸軍新編第一軍印緬抗日陣亡將士公墓」時，林旺等三隻大象也被徵召為死去的戰友們修墓，搬運建築材料。
民國三十六年孫立人將軍奉派到台灣訓練新軍，以商輪「海基號」將林旺和阿蘭、阿沛等三雙大象運到台灣，和部隊一起駐紮在高雄縣陸軍鳳山基地大操場。孫立人將軍不時會探望林旺這位「老戰友」。當時美軍協防台灣，美國國會議員和美軍將領來台訪問，總會在孫立人將軍的安排下「拜訪」大象林旺，向這位參加過二次世界大戰的老兵致敬。
大象阿蘭到了陸軍鳳山基地，因為水土不服而去世。民國四十三年，孫立人將軍將林旺和阿沛贈送給台北圓山動物園，林旺和阿沛正式從軍中「退役」。但是阿沛一年後也過世，使林旺成為碩果僅存的「象榮民」。今年高齡八十六歲的林旺堪稱是「象瑞」，傳奇性的一生於民國三十二年國軍從日軍手中俘虜而來開始，當時林旺約二十六歲，民國三十六年林旺輾轉被運至高雄縣鳳山，四十三年進入台北圓山動物園，四十三年進入台北圓山動物園，從此和另外一隻亞洲象馬蘭成為家喻戶曉的明星動物。而馬蘭已在去年底因病死亡，林旺今天凌晨也安詳過世，從此兒童口中的「林旺爺爺」成為絕響，老兵心中的「老戰友」也只能成為回憶。

Too much excitement today.... too much.... too much....
Stud (hopefully you all know him by now) showed up in my lab today with his "tortoise-heavy" backpack full of German magazine without letting me know in advance. I personally believe that Ken + Eva + Wei checked him out with the !@#$%^& judgment in a way.... coz he left "XXX is a stud" on our whiteboard the other day, and it cannot be wiped down. Then we went out for lunch on the Ave, and he showed me his German magazine while we were having our lunch.
GOD!!! Even the "regular" magazines have "X-rated" ads in them, and those ads are "everywhere"!!! Mercedes hires a naked male model in the ad; a magazine ad uses a nude girl as the cover; even some sort of a gardening ad has an uncevered gardener watering with @#$%^& (you know....) Man!!! This is the MOST X-RATED MAGAZINES I'VE EVER SEEN!!!!
After coming home, the "Johann Wolfgang" (my "neighbor", hopefully you guys still remember him.) talked to me. HE VOLUNTARILY SPOKE TO ME!!! Oh~~ about his international phone service provider, coz the phone services is under my account. But, he slightly chatted a bit, things like how's he's been doin' + spring quarter registration stuff....
You know what, when I brought up the topic that he looks thinner than he used to be, he was like...."Look, now I can do this..." then he pulls down his pants from his waist to his butt ---- to show me that the pants are too big now. I'm not in shock because of what he does (we were so so so familiar with each other to an extent people might never imagine), but I'm in shock because he somehow changes his attitude toward me. (Well, I had a severe cold war with him for like 1/2 an year by now.) That makes me happy.
Anyway, I have to go back to my study coz SOMEBODY wants to go Chinatown and have some night snack again later.......

OK, the 10M NaOH strategy didn't really work obviously......
I'll bring home some more concentrated NaOH solution tomorrow.
Oh~~ ignore my murmuring...
I was just applying basic chemical reactions to my daily life, and see if what is taught is true. I tried to unplug our basin pipe in the bathroom with pouring some 10M NaOH. I thought it's basic enough to melt all the whatever is stuck inside away, but seemed not.
(OK, I think you might want to call me a real chem-freak, but here's my argument: we're living in a world of chem, aren't we? Why do we need to study chem if is not useful at all?)
One cool chem tips: I always add some salt while cooking spaghetti, coz the salty water will increasing the boiling point of water (should be called "solution" in this case.) and makes it over 100C/212F. This fact will make spaghetti cooked quickly.
Side note: there is a cool book called What Einstein Told His Cook . If you like cooking, this is the book that you would get!!! Check out the interesting facts about kitchen science!!!

Haven't got up this early for a long time.....
I got up for registering my 2003 spring quarter classes:

NASA seminar 495 (1)
Registration used to be really exciting coz you really need to get up as early as 5:50am and log on to our computer system slightly before 6:00am, and try to type in course numbers at 6:00am exact before everybody else. It's full of excitement coz if you don't do that, you might not be able to get into the section you want. There are not so many spaces left when it's your turn to register.
But now as a senior, I always have priority to register classes, so I don't have to worry about getting a spot in the sections I want or sth like that. Can't feel the excitement anymore........

Oh~~~~ Trinity is SO cute~~~
Trinity, my youngest cousin, just celebrated her 2nd birthday several days ago. I talked to her on phone tonight. Man~~ She's SO cute!! She tries to say "Mimi姊姊", but turns out to be "Mimi貓"......Guess she watches too much YoYo TV which plays a "Mini貓" show.
But anyway, listening to her calling me Mimi貓 is just enough to complete my day!!!

I GAVE MY FIRST TIME TO STUD!!
(How's the headline? Pretty eye-catching + sensational, isn't it?)
It's "cutting people's hair" we are talking about here.....
I've NEVER tried to cut people's hair. I got a 911 call from Stud tonight, and he said that he got a "mushroom-head-look" from the hair stylist in Chinatown today. He wanted me to cut his hair again...well, kinda "embellish" his look a bit. So I did that for him. I was SO nervous (not THAT nervous la, my hands were not shaking), coz I know that he cares about the way he looks SO MUCH....(that's basically why he calls himself "stud"...)
I have to say that I made his right side a bit like "狗啃的", but perfected his left side. He applied some hair gel on his hair right after my great work, coz he said that that's the way to cover his "狗啃"-right side. God, guess he has to live with that for at least a week before his hair gets longer. (Well, actually it's not that bad......I guess it's pretty good for one's 1st time la~~)
Anyway, I might will see the "new stylish Stud" in my lab tomorrow.

住在台北，很多事要等。
等電信局或第四台最煩，他們永遠不跟你約一個固定時間。
「星期一早上過去。」
「對不起，小姐，請問早上幾點？」
「八點半到十二點半之間。」
「對不起，我可不可以跟您要工程師的手機，我跟他約一個確切的時間。」
「他們沒有手機。」
我的問題來了。
第一、他們真的忙到需要四小時的彈性，還是排時間的人技巧太差？
如果電信局的生意真的這麼好，為什麼我們的電話費還這麼貴？
第二、為什麼不給我們工程師的手機，難道我們沒事會打電話去騷擾他們嗎？
「喂，你是那天來我家裝第四台的工程師嗎？你線接得好快，我的cable好清楚，我好崇拜你喔，
那……我可不可以請你喝咖啡？」
由於我們都是特別跟公司請假在家等，所以那四小時全面戒備。
不敢洗澡，不敢上廁所，深怕他來了我們沒聽到電鈴，明天還得再請半天。
如果十二點半過了還等不到，第一個反應是怪自己是不是睡著了，打電話去問還帶著抱歉的語氣。
唉，我們被折磨慣了，竟養成如此的奴性。
等官僚單位很無奈，但你認命。
但在便利商店或速食店這種顧客至上的服務業，等一分鐘都不行。
特別是明明有空的櫃台，上面卻擺著「本櫃台停止受理，請至下一個櫃台。」
更氣的是，櫃台後明明有服務人員，在聊去哪�媔R菜。
此時你只有自立自強，排在移動速度比較快的隊伍。
照理說，高階幹部比較熟練。
但在某些店，好比說麥當勞，你永遠搞不清誰是幹部。
你知道穿Polo衫的是菜鳥，穿襯衫和背心的是幹部。
但你搞不清藍色襯衫和粉紅色襯衫的差別。
所以往往誤判情勢，最後等得更久。
醫院的等待最漫長、卻最沒有人敢抱怨。
你不願等，那就真的是去「死」好了。
你想找名醫，別人也是。
電話掛號掛到67號，下午一點半開始看。
你想，保守一點，四點去好了。
到了一看，只看到14號(是不是病情越麻煩的越有可能掛到前面的號碼？)。
因為在醫院手機通常收不到訊號，等幾分鐘你就覺得天荒地老。
身旁其他病人又不斷打噴嚏或咳嗽，你開始幻想自己會傳染到各種疾病。
等得越久，越覺得自己沒救。
於是大家的策略改成遲到，心想反正過兩號就會輪回自己。
不過醫院設計出一套複雜的遲到處罰制度，
例如順著走十號才回頭補一個先前跳過的號碼，或根本把遲到的人都塞在最後。
你掛7號，最後92號看過才輪到你。
因小失大，你下次一定一點半準時報到。
等電梯可看到最多荒謬的行為。
電梯不來，趕時間的人會一直去按明明已經亮起的電梯鈕，
好像電梯會覺得「嗯，你只按一次，我慢慢開。喔，你按了五次啊，乖乖，那我得跑快一點！」
電梯來了，明明是往下，往上的人還要先進去，害怕它待會兒過站不停。
最後終於進了電梯，乘客卻會陷入比等待時更強烈的焦慮。
特別是當只有兩個人在電梯�堙A兩人無法自然地正視前方，一定要抬頭看一樓一樓上昇的數字。
好像那是史蒂芬史匹柏的電影，錯過可惜。
在這個匆忙的城市，我們不斷地趕時間。
等待，變成一種罪孽。

小學生 用ㄅㄆㄇ唸ABC

在一個小學生的課本裡，你知道「．ㄌㄜㄒ一 ．ㄒㄩㄝ ．ㄦ ㄚˊ ㄙㄡ ㄆㄨㄧ．ㄊㄧ」就是指「The T-Shirts are so pretty．」嗎？親民黨立委孫大千今日上午拿出一位小學生的英語課本，他指出，由於國小英語教學採用英語系國家的「自然發音法」，並沒有教授音標，讓學生自己發明音標，來學習英語發音，如此下去，未來難保英語教學不會淪為下一個「建構式教學」，孫大千要求教育部應該亡羊補牢，將音標教學列為必須的教育輔助工具。
而兩位出席記者會的基層中小學英語教師，也表達對現今英語教學，採用自然發音法，而不教音標的憂心。
列席的教育部國教司副司長陳明印表示，這也是教育部當前設計課程的主要想法，同時也認為自然發音法，需要環境的配合，教育部會有一本英語教學手冊，來提供參考，不過，至於立委和基層英語教師的意見，陳明印說，將會帶回去給英語推行委員會做參考。
對於英語教育的推行，由於部分縣市與基層教師，要求將現行小學五、六年級，往下延伸到中低年級，教育部也做出宣示，陳明印指出教育部將協調各縣市，統一於九十四年度，於小學三年級開始實施英語教育。
至於當前小學教育普遍採取的自然發音法，一位在花蓮擔任小學英語教師的林正捷則指出，現在有超過一半的學生都在課本上注音，另外一半的學生不就有補習，這些句子對他們來說太簡單了，要不然就是放棄。
另一位教國中英語的林世慶老師則表示，現在國中生的英語程度，剛好呈現「雙峰」曲線，就是好的很好，但差的學生，根本無法進行教學活動，就算很早接觸，也很早就放棄，林老師認為，發音是關鍵，除了台北市以外，大部分的家庭都無法提供自然發音的環境，學生不知道怎麼念，就只好自己發明一套。
林世慶指出，音標不是用來考試，而是提供一套工具，來學習英語，他也憂心的建議說，小學應該在入門時候，利用遊戲等方式，學習英語，但到了六年級快畢業的時候，就可以加入音標。而在這位小學生的課本上，也出現用「ㄨㄚˊ ㄌㄨˋ ㄎㄜˇ ㄌㄧˊ ．ㄙ．ㄜ ㄌㄨㄥ ．ㄙ ㄉㄡˋ ㄦ」來標示「Wow! Look! There is a new store．」的發音，孫大千表示，看到之後，覺得相當痛心，自然發音法是英語系國家的教學方式，而對我們的學生，這種方法根本不切實際，如果這樣下去，有錢的學生將上補習班學英語，而一般的學生，將會自動放棄英語，或者乾脆自己發明一套音標。

最可怕的事終於還是發生了!!!
記得以前我上英文的時候, 老師從來都沒教過我們什麼音標之類的東西(我是自然發音, phonics), 所以也有一些同學拿注音來"硬湊". tomato = 他沒頭; ghosts = 狗吃屎; teacher = 踢球兒.......老實說, 也許我真的是"太笨了", 笨到學英文時忘了說我其實還會中文的. 我從來沒想過要拿中文來"輔助"學英文, 所以當我看到我同學的筆記時, 我真是"嘖嘖稱奇"呀!! 覺得他們真的是給他厲害厲害!!!
可是我還是覺得他們說起英文來怪怪的, 有一種"台灣腔", 就是聽他們說英文時我整個人就會覺得扭捏扭捏, 整個人都不對竟就是了.
誰說學英文一定要會音標!? 我就一個音標都看不懂. 國中的時候, 同學都在背單字, 只有我一個人在吃音標. 因為只要我會唸, 我就一定拼的出單字, 至於音標嘛~~就.....
我承認, 我真的很蠢, 我到現在都已經到美國第3個年頭了, 我還是不會音標.

Just got back from TECO located in downtown Seattle. 在那個超小的辦公室裡竟然要負責Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, 和 Alaska 6州的業務.
今天我去換我的護照, 那個櫃檯小姐超可愛, 服務態度超好, 一點都不bureaucratic或不耐煩~~~ :)

辭窮的城市

台北街頭，充滿了不合邏輯的標語或告示。
檳榔和水果攤，最近都被冠上「專業」的光環。
你走在街上，除了「專業律師」、「專業會計師」的招牌，也會看到「專業檳榔」、「專業水果」。
「專業」兩個字和「優質」一樣，被濫用到失去了任何區分好壞的意義。
檳榔製造的過程有專業的程度我還可以理解，但水果？拜託！
和檳榔攤一樣散佈在大街小巷的是郵局。
郵局內張貼的布告，最底下都會打上郵局的口號：「郵政與社會同時進步。」
這句話表面冠冕堂皇，但仔細想想，其實會陷郵局於可怕的危機。
如果郵政真的與社會同時進步了，那麼以網際網路進步的速度，不久後我們應該不需要郵局了。
縱使不看未來只看現在，如果郵政真的做到了與社會同時進步，
那我們這些到郵局辦事的人應該不會枯等無聊到注意到郵局的標語。
這種滑稽不只在公家機關，也在私人店面。
很多電動玩具店，門口貼著同一張布告：
「奉政府法令，於十一時後請帶身份證件，未滿十八歲及帶假證件者，請勿入內。」
這家店奉公守法，貼出這張告示立意良好。
但回頭想想，真的會有帶假證件的人看到這張告示時就突然良心發現，然後責備自己說，
「等一下，這�婸﹛y帶假證件者，請勿入內』。
讓我看看，喔──我帶的是假證件，不行，這樣我不能進去。我還是去誠品書店好了。」
轉戰誠品，得搭捷運。
你大概從來沒有注意，進捷運站後的左右牆壁，各貼著一張中、英文的服務說明。
中文版的標題是：「高運量旅客運送服務約定」。
這是哪一國的中文？
聽起來像是交大電腦研究室�堣~會用的術語，而乘客好像是要大批送進肉類批發市場的白斬雞。
出站前你若搭電扶梯，請特別注意它起頭處的一個告示：
「因電扶梯速度每分鐘39公尺，年長者、行動不便者，及推嬰兒車的旅客請改搭電梯。」
寫出「每分鐘39公尺」有任何意義嗎？
難道大家對「每分鐘39公尺」倒底有多快有清楚的概念嗎？
莫非有一名老伯伯看到這個警告會想，
「乖乖，這玩意兒的速度每分鐘有『39』公尺！我可千萬不能搭！
如果每分鐘『29』公尺還好，每分鐘『39』公尺，呼──這會要我老命！」
在捷運站進出口常會有一個「綠衣捷運小姐」的人形立牌，上面有各種公告，
公告最後，總會有一句「台北捷運公司關心您…」
捷運公司怎麼關心我們？票價打折？通宵發車？
他們當然不會這樣做（他們連飲料都不准我們喝）。
那麼當他們說要關心我們時，指的是什麼？
同樣的邏輯，出現在搬家公司的標語：「某某搬家，願與你一起成長。」
嗯…恕我無禮，但我幹嘛要跟我的搬家公司一起成長？
搬家多麻煩我們都知道，我希望越少跟搬家公司打交道越好，
真正不得已要搬家，只希望他們把我的東西一樣不少地搬到新家就好。
不管我再怎麼喜歡替我搬家的先生，我真的要與他們一起成長嗎？
好的詞彙或句子，總是不合時地地被濫用。這城市的文字，如此貧窮。

手機的一百種優點，我不用講了。我要講的，是手機的危險。
我講的不是得腦瘤之類的危險，我講的是手機會把每個人變得很奸、很甜、很膚淺、很遙遠。
先講膚淺。
24小時帶著手機，自己就像一隻狗，24小時被手機溜。
收訊越強、狗鍊越長。收不到訊號，我們會抱怨主人沒把我們牽好。
我們被手機牽著走，它響不響，決定了我們的情緒和方向。
甚至它不響時，我們也不願休息，忙著傳簡訊，或漫無目的地看手機中儲存的姓名。
有了手機，很少人孤單時在沉思，沒有人再拿筆寫字。
手機就像測病人心跳血壓的儀器，我們夜�堣ㄣ掙鷎驉A白天一但沒有動靜，我們就感到性命危急。
手機也讓人變得陰險。
「顯示號碼」的功能讓我們可以過濾電話，可以不顯示自己的號碼。
人在彼此心中的份量，清楚地被列入排行榜。
電話響起，我們常看著螢幕上的號碼，像考慮要不要讓親人安樂死一樣，猶豫著接不接。
不接，待會要不要回電、編什麼謊言？
接，要用什麼口氣、需不需要假裝在喘息？
打來的人當然也在算計。
留言，就要陷入等待的劣勢，搞不好一周後他才用e-mail回覆。
不留言，顯得我不夠大方，萬一他真的是在廁所不是就無法及時回話。
電話響，還沒接通，雙方已經開始打仗。
被過濾掉固然受傷，被接起來有時更羞辱。
我們都有這種經驗：「喂，林小琪，嗨我是王文華。」
「嗨，王文華，我待會兒打給你好不好。」(小琪啊小琪，你如果在忙，幹嘛接電話？)
更慘的是，有時她接起來了，卻在一個不適合的場合。
你柔情萬種，背好了台詞要約她(「喂，林小琪，嗨我是王文華。」)
她接起來時放低聲音，顯然在公司的重要會議(「嗨，王文華，怎麼樣，有什麼事？」)
或是你千言萬語，終於要跟她表白(「我愛你！」)
她在大街上，背後是公車的噪音(「你說什麼？再說一遍！」)
你從不知道，「有什麼事」這四個字，竟是人生最狠毒的拒絕方式。
你從不知道，「我愛你」再說一遍，竟要費這麼大的力氣。
不適當的地方講手機，往往會傳達錯誤的訊息，此時就要借助簡訊。
簡訊是兩人關係進入更高境界的象徵。
寫簡訊時不用主詞、很少署名、英文字簡化到要猜的地步，因為有想像空間而無比甜蜜。
但有時你聽到嗶嗶兩聲，興高采烈地跑去看簡訊，結過發現竟然是系統業者的促銷訊息。
此時你心中大罵「XXX」，然後決定從遠傳換到台灣大哥大。
手機謀殺了私人的空間，所以培養出許多謊言。
由於理論上手機讓我們在任何時候找到任何人，所以找不到時，就需要很多解釋。
我們都說過也聽過這些謊言：
「喔，我手機沒電了/掉了/沒帶/當時在陽明山收不到訊號。」
「你打來時我在開會/洗澡/在街上聽不到/跑來接時你已經掛掉」。
此外，我們都幹過這等低級勾當：
當不該打來的人打來時，假裝閒話家常，然後告訴身旁的人說剛剛是同事打來借手提音響。
我們也偷看過情人的通話紀錄，當被對方撞見時，會說我的手機沒電了借你的手機打一下。
其實我不知道，手機使人更近或更遠。有些人的手機，永遠只能留言。

NICE DINNER!!!
We pigged out at the hot-pot place totally. totally. We spent "3 hours" on our dinner!!!
One of my friend gave me a scarf knitted by herself, it looks so cool!!
And the other friend got sth "exciting" for me which is actually on its way here to Seattle. And he said that it's ESSENTIAL for my daily life or sth like that. He kept describing how is looks, the "size" of it , and the "function" of it.....and I was totally like.....!@#$%^&......GOD!! Now I'm wondering if I am looking forward to it.....

Happy Birthday, Yang + William + Ilham!!!!
(Can you imagine that!? 3 of my friends have their B-Day on the same day? God, I'm broke now~~~)
Just got back from ToDai, a birthday-people eat FREE Japanese buffet restaurant. When we just got into ToDai, another friend and I shouted "kinda" loud asked Yang to unwrap her gift from Victoria's Secret~~ that was SO EMBARRASSED!!! When she saw the "shiny-pinky bra", she was like "OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG...." and changed it right away!!(hahahahahahaha~~~~~)
And after that, we went to Gasworks Park in the cold-cold (39F/4C) foggy-foggy weather with our skirts and tank top +light jacket only. We were seriously crazy!!!
Oh~~ What a night!!!

Me so tired today, and I think I'm going to bed like "this" early tonight....Lemme see....I can have about 10 hour-sleep if I go to bed right now.......Nah~~ I'm gonna do some bedtime reading, so......9 hours of sleep should be enough. Hahahahahaha~~~~ 99!!

UW experts react to disaster

The space shuttle Columbia disintegrated over east Texas Saturday morning, killing its seven-member crew and leaving a trail of debris across a string of rural communities. One of the seven, payload specialist Michael Anderson was a UW alumnus.
Anderson completed his undergraduate work in 1981 with a degree in physics and astronomy. He was 43, and leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
Also on board the shuttle were David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, Rick Husband, William McCool and Ilan Ramon.
UW Interim President Lee Huntsman will meet with deans today to discuss a memorial for Anderson and the other crewmembers. Flags will fly at half-mast across the United States until Wednesday, as determined by President Bush. The UW flag may remain lowered beyond that time.
Columbia lost communication with the NASA at 9 a.m. EST; it was scheduled to land at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center at 9:16 a.m. When communications broke, the Columbia was traveling at 12,500 mph — 18 times the speed of sound — and at an altitude of about 203,000 feet.
Although NASA has not yet determined the cause of the tragedy, early analyses have pointed to faulty ceramic tiling on the left wing of the shuttle. A piece of insulating foam came loose from one of the shuttle’s external fuel tanks during launch, hitting its left side. Temperature sensors in the same location reported it was heating up four times faster than the right side of the shuttle just before it broke up.
Jim Hermanson, UW aeronautics and astronomic professor specializing in combustion and propulsion at high speed, said even minor damage to the ceramic tiles could be devastating. Tiles along the nose, tail and wings — the main protection against the heat of atmospheric re-entry, which is most intense at those locations — are the most critical.
“If one of those was damaged, it would have very serious consequences,” Hermanson said. “There’s so much critical technology, and so many things that can go wrong. This is not the same as commercial aviation, where there are millions of flying miles.”
Rolf Rysdyk, an assistant professor in aeronautics and astronautics, said that re-entry is an incredibly delicate phase of a space-shuttle flight. He compared it to driving 200 miles per hour on an interstate — safe until the car hits a rock.
“That [shuttle] is made to go really fast, but only if nothing goes wrong,” Rysdyk said. “[Re-entry] is like skipping a stone, allowing it to very slowly get into the Earth’s atmosphere.”
Rysdyk said accounts from east Texas of a close sonic boom indicated real trouble.
“That tells me that they ended up in a very steep descent, much steeper than [it] should have been,” he said, adding that a commercial jet descends from its cruising height of 35,000 feet at about 1,000 feet per minute. “They must have been losing thousands of feet per minute.”
Hermanson said the problem could have been getting worse for several minutes, unknown to the crew until a “drastic loss of control.” At that point, there would have been little time left for action.
“When they discovered they had a real problem, it probably went pretty quickly,” he said.
The telemetry — data from the sensors on the Columbia, including voice transmissions — will be closely scrutinized for more information, Hermanson said.
“In a case like this, there’s no wreckage,” he said.
Hermanson remembers the Challenger disaster 17 years ago that spurred discussion about the safety of the space program. Someone told him that every time a mission begins, the odds of a catastrophic accident are about one in 400. Add that to an aging space-shuttle fleet (the Columbia was the oldest shuttle of its kind) and a very low number of test flights, and the risk becomes extremely high.
“The problem is, there have been relatively few shuttle flights compared to other air vehicles. It’s a risky situation ... this is a risky business, just not an inherently safe thing to do.”
Adam Bruckner, professor and chair of aeronautics and astronautics, said a generally good track record within the shuttle program makes disasters more shocking.
“My heart sank to my feet,” Bruckner said. “Everything has gone so well, people take it for granted.”
News of the Columbia tragedy shocked Hermanson.
“When I first got the news, I felt like the whole world was falling apart,” Hermanson said. “Like a dream. This isn’t happening.”
For Rysdyk, the Columbia tragedy bring doubts about the field as a whole, as well as its six major specializations.
“The space shuttle combines all of these disciplines. If something goes wrong, it could be in any one,” Rysdyk said. “If something goes wrong, how are you going to find it?”
He also expressed surprise that the shuttle crew didn’t use the robot arm to examine the extent of the foam damage, as is usually done. Had they known of a flaw in the ceramic tiles, the crew may have been able to prevent the disaster, according to Rysdyk.
“There was a possibility they could do something — a slight turn as they came in.”
Huntsman’s reaction reflected that of many outside the field.
“I was kind of brokenhearted about the whole crash. It just sort of gnaws at you ... we’re all going through a shock type of reaction.”
“I’ll never forget that moment. There’s nothing like that particular moment in time when you’re in space and finally do what you’ve been dreaming about since you were a kid.”

Went to Victoria's Secret with Stud for a friend's birthday gift. GOD!! Those are REAL EXPENSIVE bras!!! We got a shiny-pinky "Lined Demi Bra" for her after I personally tried on every "padded bra". MAN!! I'm telling you, I can see the "thing" while wearing the one we got for her. Stud was like "OMG, let's get this one!! They look huge!!" right after seeing me walking out from the fitting room. We were like "hahahaha~~ She'd better like it!!" But I personally think that we're gonna get killed.

NASA Vows to Find Cause of Shuttle Disaster

JOHNSON SPACE CENTER, Texas (Reuters) - Shaken NASA officials vowed to find out what caused the space shuttle Columbia to break up over Texas on Saturday, saying they would look closely at the impact of a piece of foam insulation that struck the orbiter's left wing at takeoff.
They said the shuttle was just 16 minutes from landing at Kennedy Space Center in Florida and gliding along smoothly when sensors began failing, signaling that something was wrong.
"We lost data and that's when we clearly began to know that we had a bad day," Ron Dittemore, the agency's space shuttle program manager, told reporters as he fought back tears. "We're devastated."
Columbia, the oldest shuttle in the U.S. fleet, disintegrated 40 miles above northeastern Texas, showering the region with debris and killing the seven astronauts on board.
Dittemore said a piece of foam insulation came off the shuttle fuel tanks at liftoff on Jan. 16 and banged into the spacecraft's left wing, but was judged by ground controllers not to have damaged the orbiter's critical heat shield.
But on Saturday, after the Columbia had re-entered the earth's atmosphere to head home from its 16-day scientific mission, sensors in the left wing began to fail in a possible indication that excessive heat was seeping into the shuttle structure, he said.
At the time that Columbia came apart, its wings were heated to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit, but the heatshield should have prevented damage to the shuttle, Dittemore said.
"Now, in hindsight, that impact (of insulation) was on the left wing. All the indicators (of trouble) were on the left wing. We can't discount that there might be a connection, but we can't rush to judgment on this," he said.
He pointed to a critical vulnerability of the shuttles, saying that if they do suffer heatshield damage at launch, nothing can be done about it.
Astronauts cannot make repairs and there are no flight maneuvers that can reduce the heat of reentry, caused by friction with the earth's atmosphere.
"There was zero we could do about it," Dittemore said.
He said flying insulation was seen on a shuttle launch last year, but did not affect the flight.
The shuttle program's other disaster, the explosion of Challenger shortly after launch in January 1986, was linked to fuel tank problems. In that case, a gasket failed, causing the fuel to ignite in a blast that killed the seven astronauts on board.
Dittemore said NASA was sending experts to northeast Texas to help in the search for shuttle parts. They would be rounded up for investigators to study for clues to the disaster.
NASA also said it would treat the investigation much like an aviation accident and enlisted help from government transport and aviation safety experts.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates plane crashes, said it had assigned five investigators at the space agency's request.
They are experts in reconstructing and analyzing debris fragments and evaluating the performance of flight systems, like hydraulics and electronics.
"We have offered whatever assistance we can provide," safety board spokesman Ted Lopatkiewicz said.
A Federal Aviation Administration accident investigator will also participate in the probe, the agency said. That official could seek help from other agency investigators, if needed, a spokeswoman said.
The Transportation Department will also contribute at least one expert from its advanced systems research facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Included on the flight was Israel's first astronaut, Ilan Ramon, which raised fears that the shuttle may have attacked or sabotaged, but NASA officials said there was no indication of that.
Dittemore said NASA would ground the three remaining shuttles until it figured out what happened and fixed the problem.
"My impression is we are going to gather every piece we can find, treat this much like an aircraft incident and see if we can solve the puzzle," Dittemore said.
He said some evidence may have burned up during re-entry. "Other debris is just spread over such a wide territory that we may never find it," he said.
Grounding the other shuttles could affect three astronauts currently on the International Space Station, who are ferried home by the shuttle. He said they would have enough food to stay on the space station until June, but a NASA spokesman said they could be brought back by a Russian Soyuz spacecraft if necessary.

GOD!! 蔡明亮的電影真的是....."難怪只能做'得獎用'" I don't really get the point why he composes the film like that. A story of 2 people barely know each other, one in Taipei and one in Paris. The film portraits what they do everyday in the different cities, somehow connected to a extend too tricky to tell. And there's one scene that really makes me spurted food in my mouth ---- main characters do the "BJ" or sth like that. I really don't see any relevance here.
Anyway, one thing I found cool is that Chen Shiang-Chyi (陳湘琪) is also in the movie!! If you saw 大醫院小醫師 before, then you'll know whom I am talking about. I believe she now teaches in college and she really gets her own style.
